I have to say that I do think there are differences in interpersonal coomunication face to face and via electronic mediums. Though I do not (maybe not yet) communicate with friends and families via FB or Twitter, I use my phone a lot especially to text message and with some who are overseas, I chat via MSN.
I think that the differences lie beyond the fact that one involves synchronous and the other asynchronous communication.
I dont know about you guys but I personally agree with the Hyperpersonal perspective which claims that relationships via Computer Mediated Communication (CMC) are bring individuals closer together than relationships developed in person. I think its the distance that makes people closer and this goes with the saying "distance can make your heart grow fonder" (or something like that).
Nowadays we have Skype, Oovoo, MSN, etc. where we can talk to someone and even see their faces just like we would if we are talking to them in person. The only difference is that you are separated by the computer screens. And yet, we still feel there are differences when talking to someone via Skype and face to face. Why is that? And have you ever had something to say which you prefer to say it over a text message, an email or MSN? Why is that?
I am a heavy phone user, and I go online to chat or email people everyday and I can say that most of the communication I make is CMC. And you may wonder, why I cannot seem to wrap my head around the use of FB and Twitter to communicate? I cannot say that I prefer face to face communication. I shall get back to this question by the end of this course because I myself cannot answer it right now.
