past particle -ed
I noticed this when I was talking to a friend on MSN the other day. I asked the friend
"have you mandied?"
mandied = mandi + -ed
mandi = shower
I meant to say
"have you showered?"
Another thing is how a friend used the noun MSN (messenger) as a verb.
He said, "I din't realize you msned me"
He used the noun MSN with the past particle -ed and used it as a verb.

CS in CMC
I am currently reading McLellan's Phd thesis on Malay-English code switching in CMC on two Brunei's online forums. Not only that I find his thesis relevant to my Academic Exercise's topic but I also find it very interesting. I think his focus on CS in CMC indirectly serves as an eye opener and allow us to see yet another area of difference between CMCs and face to face communication. he also highlighted in the introduction to the thesis how CS in CMC involves more choices by the interlocutors as they have time to rethink which language they want to use to convey their messages before typing them whereas in face to face communication, choices are made more instantly. I will get back to this post once I have finished reading the thesis.

E-communication
I have to say that I do think there are differences in interpersonal coomunication face to face and via electronic mediums. Though I do not (maybe not yet) communicate with friends and families via FB or Twitter, I use my phone a lot especially to text message and with some who are overseas, I chat via MSN.
I think that the differences lie beyond the fact that one involves synchronous and the other asynchronous communication.
I dont know about you guys but I personally agree with the Hyperpersonal perspective which claims that relationships via Computer Mediated Communication (CMC) are bring individuals closer together than relationships developed in person. I think its the distance that makes people closer and this goes with the saying "distance can make your heart grow fonder" (or something like that).
Nowadays we have Skype, Oovoo, MSN, etc. where we can talk to someone and even see their faces just like we would if we are talking to them in person. The only difference is that you are separated by the computer screens. And yet, we still feel there are differences when talking to someone via Skype and face to face. Why is that? And have you ever had something to say which you prefer to say it over a text message, an email or MSN? Why is that?
I am a heavy phone user, and I go online to chat or email people everyday and I can say that most of the communication I make is CMC. And you may wonder, why I cannot seem to wrap my head around the use of FB and Twitter to communicate? I cannot say that I prefer face to face communication. I shall get back to this question by the end of this course because I myself cannot answer it right now.

Do I get an extra credit?
I think by now most of the people who knows me know that I am not on facebook or twitter or other social networking sites. No, I am not being an anti social nor am I being super egoistic not wanting to join the latest bandwagon or the "in" thing. I just like to keep my life private (no offence to avid FB or twitter users). I admit I have tried a few times to sign up on FB and I gave up not even half way through signing up and immediately deactivated the account. Just the thought of sharing my personal details (though are not all the time true) makes me anxious.
However, because this course is on ELECTRONIC communication, I will have to have a FB account atleast to explore and learn more about e-communication. In other words, what ever it takes for me to score this course, I would even (can't believe I am saying this) sign up on twitter if I am required to (again, not using my personal details).
